"His...hold upon the English language,...has become an instrument upon which he is able to play a greater variety of melodies to perfection than any other man." - Edmund Gosse

Born in 1809 and educated at Cambridge, Alfred (later, Lord) Tennyson was a highly successful Victorian poet, achieving great critical acclaim during his lifetime. He was Poet Laureate from 1850 until his death in 1892. A powerfully built, dark skinned, striking-looking man. If you hadn't known he was a poet you might have supposed him to be a ship's captain with piratical leanings.

This Pocket Book contains six complete poems by Tennyson and extracts from his longer works such as Mariana, In Memoriam and The Lady of Shalott. The cover is a drawing by JL Carr and the incidentals from Thomas Bewick.

This little volume is just one in the series of Carr's Pocket Books; they hover between a greeting and a present and make a lasting alternative to a birthday card. In cold bedrooms, only one hand need suffer exposure. A distinguished novelist recommends them for reading in the bath and an ambassador claims they can be palmed from the cuff during tedious speeches or profitless sermons.

Thank you so much for all you do & for giving such pleasure

I wanted to tell you how delighted my 96 year old neighbour was with her book, & it was she who had kindly introduced me to yourselves. I had bought her the Tennyson (& the Christmas book) as a Christmas gift but she had fallen of late & broken her hip so as your speedy delivery had arrived, I thought the Tennyson one would cheer her up. She has already read it several times & couldn't wait for me to read The Owl poem with her.
