"Nature's sternest painter yet the best" - Lord Byron

George Crabbe was born in 1754 in Aldeburgh, which ultimately led to him becoming known as the Suffolk Poet although he initially trained to be a doctor. He struggled in the literary world early in his career, became a clergyman, but eventually grew to prominence portraying the hardships of rural life. He died in 1832.

This Pocket Book recounts the opera of Peter Grimes, taken from Crabbe's The Poor of the Borough. The engravings which break-up the text are from Thomas Bewick's workshop and the cover is drawn by JL Carr.
