"My malady never seemed so much alleviated as while I was reading him [Herbert]" - William Cowper
Born into a wealthy family in 1593, Herbert went to Trinity College, rose to be Orator for Cambridge University before a brief spell in Parliament. He then became a devout country parson, renowned for his conformity to the church and taking great care of his flock. He died in 1633 yet his poetry achieved great popularity in the 17th century, there being 11 editions published of The Temple.
This Pocket Book carries 12 of his poems including The Elixir, The Collar and Paradise.
