"The greatest labouring-class poet that England has ever produced" - Jonathan Bate

Born in 1793, John Clare had a difficult life working on the land as a child but achieved modest success with his early poetry. However, it was unable to sustain him and his family; his mental health worsened in later life and he was ultimately admitted into an asylum. He died in 1864 and is known in memorium as the Northamptonshire Peasant Poet.

This Pocket Book contains 15 poems by Clare, some from the Shepherd's Calendar, including The Ladybird, The first Sight of Spring and The Mole-catcher. The cover is from a painting by JL Carr and the engravings within the text are by Thomas Bewick.

Pocket-sized at 13 x 9.5cm (5 x 3.5" in old money) and comprising 16 pages with a firm card cover. This little volume is just one in the series of Carr's Pocket Books; they hover between a greeting and a present and make a lasting alternative to a birthday card. In cold bedrooms, only one hand need suffer exposure. A distinguished novelist recommends them for reading in the bath and an ambassador claims they can be palmed from the cuff during tedious speeches or profitless sermons.

    Evocative

One element that may not be noticed as a splendid companion to John Clare’s evocative verse is the cover with its paintings, both front and back I’d guess, and an acknowledgement that one of them is by JL Carr, the creator of the Quince Tree Press.
