Westmorland had an administrative function from the 12th century until 1974, when it was subsumed into Cumbria. This was the final Map in the series, completed by JL Carr in 1976. It is dedicated to Mrs Bell of Appleby who went to war with her son in 1814. The Map includes the waters at Grasmere, Hawes, Ullswater and Windermere. Isir the giant of Eamont Bridge is celebrated as well as Catherine Parr who is noted as being small in size but great in spirit; she had four husbands, the third being Henry VIII.

Publication Essentials
Poster-sized and litho printed on quality card in numbered limited editions, this is one in a series of pre-1974 county area Maps. Designed for framing and to stimulate conversation, JL Carr created the Maps as a way to present an optimistic set of testimonials to our indigenous, daring and buoyant forbears and to hearten those Englishmen who hope for a rekindling of the spirit which has enlivened our nation through its chequered history. These architectural, historical, literary and pictorial curiosities are not to be used for navigation; except in the broadest of terms.Map Details
